communist system - Stalin believed that Communism should spread

Truman Doctrine that the US is committed to
prevent the spread of Communism throughout the

- Stalins death left a new leader Khrushchev to
take over USSR - US, afraid of continued Communism spread, help
build up Taiwan (Nationalist Party) - Khrushchev wanted to change USSR into a
non-Stalinist nation which was a threat to China - Mao, afraid of betrayal by USSR, wanted to
improve relations with US - pingpong diplomacy reduced tensions between
China and US and now they both turned against USSR
