  • Albert Ellis was born in 1913 into a Jewish
    family in Pittsburgh.
  • Early in his life his family moved to NYC
  • At age 5, he just about died
  • At age 7, he was largely on his own and thought
    that most of his family was crazy
  • His parents divorced when he was 12 he gave up
    his plans to be a Hebrew teacher

  • In 1947, he earned a PhD in clinical psychology
    from Columbia University
  • Was a psychoanalyst until he started his own
    theory in 1955
  • Wrote the book, Reason Emotion in Psychotherapy
    in 1962

  • People have 3 irrational beliefs
  • I absolutely must be perfect. Otherwise, I am an
    inadequate worthless person
  • People must treat me kindly fairly. Otherwise,
    they are evil must be punished.
  • I must live a comfortable, unhassled enjoyable
    life. Otherwise, I cant stand it!

  • Counselors listen carefully for illogical or
    faulty statements from their clients and
    challenge these statements.
  • A counselor does this while showing care
    concern, using humor helping the client solve
    difficult issues
  • The primary focus is on helping people realize
    that they can live more rational and product lives

    things, but the views which they take of them
  • When the words must, should, ought, have to
    need are used, the person makes demands wishes
    think irrationally.
  • Ellis formula is as simple as A-B-C

  • C Consequences (feelings about the event, ones
    self, others the world)
  • These beliefs (thoughts) can be positive,
    negative, neutral or mixed

  • Cognitive disputation the counselor uses direct
    questions, logical reasoning and persuasion. The
    use of why may be employed which is taboo in
    most theories
  • Imaginal disputation the client imagines an
    upsetting situation, analyzes the irrational
    thoughts then reimagines the situation with the
    new modified thoughts

    that are opposite to their normal, irrational
    ways
  • People should on themselves
  • People engage in musterbation
