Types of Knowledge
  • The idea of multiple types of knowledge/
intelligences was later expanded by a
    psychologist named Howard Gardner.
  • According to Gardners theory, there are seven
    types of intelligences.
  • We all possess each intelligence however, every
    person has four dominant intelligences.
  • To determine your dominant intelligences, visit

Discussion Questions
  • Were you surprised by your dominant
intelligences? Why do you think that is?
  • What implications will knowing this theory have
    on your teaching?
  • What are some difficulties you might have in
implementing this theory in your learning
    environment?

Stages of Development
  • The last stage, formal operations, has received
    the most criticism.
  • Research indicates that there is a great range in
cultural and individual differences which affect
at what age humans enter the final stage.
  • And even individuals who demonstrate the capacity
for formal operations, may only use it
selectively (usually in areas of their lives
    where they are experts)
  • For example, an experienced chess player may use
formal operations when playing chess however,
they will not use it in all thinking.
  • It has been suggested that Piaget underestimated
how much effort, energy and knowledge is needed
    to use formal operations.

Discussion Questions
  • What are your ideas on the Stages of Development
theory? Can you see evidence of it in the videos?
  • Do you think that children move from stage to
stage as a result of their biology (nature) or
    their environment (nurture)?
  • Do you think that the formal operations stage is
a realistic expectation at the age of 11?
