3
What are plates?
  • Plate tectonic is a theory that the lithosphere
is made of plates that move and interact with
    each other at their boundaries.
  • There are two types of plates oceanic and
    continental
  • The boundaries of the plates are the locations of
    many earthquakes and volcanoes.

4
Current Plate Boundaries
5
How do we know they move?
  • Fossil evidence, rock types and climatic changes
    are evidence of plate tectonic
  • The jig-saw like fit of some continents indicate
    movement. (South America and Africa)

6
Are they still moving?
  • Measurements indicate that the plates are still
    moving
  • Earthquakes at plate boundaries are caused by
    plate motion
  • Volcanoes are due to plate motion

7
Evidence
  • Some specific evidence
  • Fossils (Mesosaurus) that are found on different
    continents
  • Distinctive rock formation on two different
    continents
  • Pangaea250 million years ago, all continents
were welded together forming a super-continent

Where are we going?
  • Types of plate movement
  • Convergenttwo plates moving together
  • Pacific Plate and Philippine Plate
  • Divergenttwo plates moving apart
  • Mid-Atlantic Ridge
  • Transform or Lateraltwo plates sliding past each
    other
  • Southern California

10
Will we ever get there?
  • Using the information concerning plate tectonics
and the map of the current plates, think about
how the plates could move and what effect that
    would have on the biosphere.

What if the year is 8804

Write a letter
  • You are a time traveler. You have just arrived
at a future time on Earth and saw the current map
of the continents. You are to write a letter to
the president of the world explaining the
difference between the land form of Earth of your
time (2004) and their time (a few million years
in the future). Include what happened, why it
happened and what will continue to happen. Be
sure to include evidence of past plate movement.
