Our Theme
  • To understand, prevent and reduce oral health
    disparities among young children
  • Primary focus
  • Preventing Early Childhood Caries

3
The Problem
  • The 1993-94 California Oral Health Needs
Assessment Survey found the prevalence of ECC to
be 14 among all preschool children, but 44
among Asian and 39 among Latino children from
low-income families enrolled in Head Start
    programs.
  • (Pollick et al.)
  • In a recent study of gt2000 young children near
the CA-Mexican border, the ECC prevalence was
    58. (Ramos-Gomez)

4
Research Mission
  • Identify biologic, behavioral, and contextual
factors associated with health disparities among
    different ethnic/racial groups.
  • Enhance our ability to target children likely to
be at risk for dental caries.
  • Provide successful multidisciplinary
  • interventions to prevent disease and reduce oral
    health disparities.

5
Multi-faceted Approach
6
Why is this Center different from business as
usual?
  • RFA required
  • Collaborations with minority institutions that
serve large populations from groups traditionally
considered to be under served with respect to
    oral health needs.
  • Collaborations across the professions and a
    multidisciplinary scope
  • Development of regional and national research and
    training networks
  • Research that will ultimately reduce health
    disparities
