Title: What is
1LAMP is a regional alliance of ten information
schools and academic libraries throughout the
Midwest dedicated to helping students from
statistically underrepresented populations to
pursue careers within the field of library and
information science.
This project is supported by IMLS
2The lack of ethnic minority librarians in
administrative or management positions within the
library profession has had a devastating impact
on the quality of library service available to
the ethnic minority community The shortage of
ethnic minority staffing in these situations
impairs the overall quality of the library.
-Reese, G. L. (1999). Library schools and
recruiting ethnic minorities. In G. L. Reese E.

attracting people of color to the library
profession.
3- Institutional collaboration to strengthen the
commitment to diversity awareness and issues - Mentoring to provide guidance and support
through the education process - Financial support to aid in the pursuance of
the MLIS degree - Summer internships for practical exposure to
LIS careers - Summer institutes to create awareness of LIS
professions
4- What did the scholars tell us about the program
- They like the idea of having a mentor
- Theyre excited about the prospect of becoming a
mentor themselves when they graduate - They see the program as an opportunity to build
professional relationships and network - The knowledge that their financial burden will be
lighter makes it easier to excel at their studies
and focus on their future in the field.
5The 2nd LAMP Summer Institute was held from June
1-4, 2008 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
. It included panels, speakers, round table
discussions, and tours of the UW-Milwaukee and
Marquette University libraries.
The 1st LAMP Summer Institute was held from May
21-23, 2007 at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Scholars, mentors, and
several LIS professionals gathered to share their
experiences.
6The Institute not only gave me more knowledge,
it has given me more courage and confidence to
pursue the promotion of access to information.
