Title: Problem Description

1
Technical Description
  • Problem Description
  • High-intensity operation at hgt1 is susceptible to
longitudinal coupled bunch and single bunch
    instabilities
  • These instabilities are difficult to predict and
simulate (close relationship to task 20)
  • Technical Systems
  • Bunch-by-bunch longitudinal feedback (for dipole
    modes of oscillation)
  • Measurement of bunch positions in time domain
  • Broadband RF kicker cavity
  • Short risetimes required because of bunch-spacing
  • One signal path per bunch
  • Higher order mode feedback
  • Measurement of beam signal in frequency domain
  • Broadband RF kicker cavity
  • Each frequency component may be processed
    individually using DSP (filtering, weighting,
    etc.)

2
Objectives
  • Requirement Analysis
  • Simulations, analytical calculations for fixing
    the main parameters
  • Kicker voltage
  • Bandwidth
  • Delay
  • Comparison with other systems
  • Concept
  • Description of the system topology for both types
    of feedback system
  • Systems must be based on modern digital
technology (DSPs, FPGAs) in order to have a
    universal and flexible solution
  • Experiments with prototypes of sub-components
  • Design Specification
  • Detailed description of both systems
  • Should ideally serve as the basis for a prototype
    construction

Organizational Issues
  • Personnel
  • Coordinators
  • CERN R. Garoby?C. Rossi
  • GSI H. Klingbeil
  • Posts at GSI
  • 1 new Physicist
  • 1 new Engineer
  • Both are also responsible for Task 19
  • Advertisements for posts are prepared but not yet
    published
  • Physicist will stay at CERN for a few weeks
  • 93.6 person-months _at_ GSI, 6 person-months _at_CERN
    (3 years duration)

Organizational Issues
  • Work Sharing
  • GSI
  • Beam dynamics studies and simulations
  • Low-level RF development based on DSPs and FPGAs
  • Closed-loop control simulations (partly based on
    CERN code)
  • CERN
  • Participation in beam dynamics studies and
    simulations
  • Kicker and Pickup investigations
  • General design of power amplifier
  • Participation in closed-loop control simulations
