Title: Introduction to Percents
1Introduction to Percents
We have been using manipulatives in class to see
percents in concrete form.
A cube equals one hundredth.
A flat equals one whole.
A slice equals one thousandth.
A rod equals one tenth.
2What percents do these models represent?
0.2 or 20
0.14 or 14
3Now, we are ready to take percents to an abstract
level. We cannot get an abstract idea just by
looking at a model. We must add some
thought. Abstract ideas are not Right There.
4Think of the word beauty.Beauty is an abstract
idea.
What comes to your mind?
5You might think of your favorite beach.
6or, a flower blooming after a spring rain.
7But, you cannot imagine beauty without thinking
about something.
Beauty is an idea that applies to things we see.
8The same thing is true about the word percent.
Percent is an idea that applies to things
that can be counted.
9Task 1
Create and complete a chart similar to the one on
the right.
