E-Commerce in the InterModal Transportation Enviro
nment
Presented By JOHN DALY
2
Current Trends
  • Integration of Cargo Transportation
  • Air, Sea, Road and Rail
  • Ever Increasing Automation
  • Fully Computerised Tracking
  • Faster Automated Clearance Systems
  • Increased Data Exchange
  • Requirement for Greater Interconnection Capability

3
Some Complexities
  • New Functional Complexities
  • Increased Scope, Automation and Interconnection
of cargo management operations, both internal and
    external
  • Inherited Complexities
  • Long lived cargo practices, formats and protocols
  • Future Complexities
  • The ever evolving Internet messaging revolution

4
The InterModal Inheritance
  • IATA Formats
  • Cargo IMP, AHM Messages, SPEC-2000, AVNET etc.
  • Many Other Standards
  • EDIFACT, CARGOFACT, ANSI X.12 etc.
  • Structured and Unstructured Messages
  • Flat File Interchanges
  • Multiple Formats/Protocols
  • SITA, TRAXON, SMTP, ESMTP, FTP, HTTP, MIME etc.
  • Other Cargo Community Systems
  • Wireless Protocols
  • And NOW XML
  • Proprietary Formats and Protocols

5
Primary Integration Considerations
  • Must accommodate MultiModal Legacy Systems
  • In the immediate future, many of the different
systems in use by the different parties involved
in InterModal Transportation will have to be
    maintained.
  • There can be no question of suddenly introducing
a single CrossModal set of standards.
  • Integration Solutions must be Flexible
  • Relatively easy Rules Based connection of new
    partners (possibly using strange
formats/protocols) without the need for the new
    partners to change legacy systems.
  • Provision for transition to new formats,
protocols and technologies as these evolve.
  • MUST AVOID SPAGHETTI SOFTWARE

6
A Solution
  • A Centralised Message Broker
  • A Message Broker is installed at each major Cargo
Hub, for example by a Cargo Airline.
  • It is a Central computer system that accepts
messages in different formats using different
    protocols from several different communications
    networks.
  • The Message Broker filters, reformats and
duplicates messages as required and then routes
them to their destinations in the appropriate
(possibly different) format via the appropriate
    (and again possibly different) communications
    network.

An Example - Cargolux
A Message Broker Solution

8
Message Security Issues
  • Growing Vulnerability
  • Networks becoming more Open
  • Limitations of Digital Signatures
  • Often cannot be passed from one format/protocol
    to another
  • Multiple Layered Security
  • Use the Security appropriate to each specific
    link
  • Focus more attention on Detection of Fraud rather
than trying to achieve the impossible goal of
    100 message security
