• Location made it a trading center
• Traded pottery, swords, figurines, precious
  metals
• Also exported culture burial rituals,
  architecture, religion

• Knossos center of civilization
• Had no walls protecting city
• Civilization named after King Minos
• Paintings revealed much about Minoans
• Enjoyed art, sports, and nature
• Women held higher rank than in neighboring
  cultures
• A theme we will see in Ancient Greece and Rome

Minoan Decline

• Ended around 1200 B.C.
• Reasons are unclear
• Possible natural disasters

Phoenicians

• Flourished around 1100 B.C.
• Famous for their trading empire
• Set up several wealthy city-states around the
  Mediterranean Sea
• Excellent shipbuilders and seafarers
• Famous for their purple dye made from rotting
  snails

Phoenician Newspaper

• In groups of two create a newspaper about
  Phoenician life
• The newspaper will have four articles (two from
  each person)
• At least 4 things must be written in Phoenician,
  including Title of newspaper (page 72)
• You must include a Classified section. This does
  not count as one of the 4 articles
