History of the Trauma Informed Care Initiative

• Fueled by
• Natural disasters
• Increased information about the neurological
  impact of chronic stress, abuse, and neglect on
  the developing brain
• Transformation of the mental health and substance
  abuse system of care

Floridas Evolution

• Seclusion and restraint reduction activities in
  Florida beginning in 2003
• Disaster grants for crisis counselors in FEMA
  centers and post disaster counseling for
  survivors
• Awareness and efforts on the part of a number of
  agencies to address trauma but not in a
  coordinated way

• Trauma Informed care workshop presented with the
  aid of a technical assistance grant from National
  Technical Assistance Center (NCTIC) on February
  3, 2009
• Invitees from DOH, DOE, DJJ, DCF, AHCA,
  providers, Office of Disabilities, and family
  members met on February 4

• Determined to form the Interagency Trauma
  Informed Care Workgroup
• Generated strategies that could be introduced
  immediately in their agencies
• Began to articulate a vision statement for the
  workgroup

  adjustment. We are resolved that in Florida,
  trauma will be recognized and addressed through
