Title: MEGAN Biogenic Emissions Modeling Activities

1
MEGAN Biogenic Emissions Modeling Activities
  • Alex Guenther
  • Earth Sun Systems Laboratory
  • National Center for Atmospheric Research
  • Boulder CO USA

2
Tasks for 2006
  • Improved landcover for specific regions (U.S.,
Canada, Mexico, southern Africa, Europe, China,
    Malaysia)
  • VOC chemical speciation
  • Response of BVOC emissions to ozone and CO2
    variations
  • Oxidized biogenic VOC and Secondary Organic
    Aerosol emissions
  • Seasonal and interannual BVOC emission variations
  • BVOC emissions from shrubs, grass and crops
  • Update Soil NO emissions

3
Regional landcover and emission factors
Task Incorporate existing regional landcover
and emission factor data that have not been
incorporated into MEGAN. Expected result This
effort is primarily for high resolution regional
modeling (including urban areas) but will also
lead to improved estimates for low resolution
global models Status Active effort. Western U.S.
should be completed by summer 2006. Other regions
will follow.
4
VOC chemical speciation
Task Include all significant biogenic trace gas
emissions (gt110 compounds) Expected Result This
will be useful as chemistry models begin
considered more chemical species- including
different SOA yields Status Active project.
Should be completed by summer 2006.
5
BVOC emission response to ozone and CO2 variations
Task Have BVOC emissions respond to changes in
ozone and CO2 Expected Result Capability for
examining potential feedbacks and future
trends Status Active project. Observational
studies scheduled for summer 2006. May be
completed by fall 2006.
6
Oxidized biogenic VOC and Secondary Organic
Aerosol Emissions
Task Simulate hourly emissions of SOA and
oxidized VOC that arise from oxidation of
biogenic VOC in vegetation canopies Expected
Result Can include this source of SOA and
oxyVOC in models (it is currently not
included) Status Active project. Should be
completed by fall 2006.
7
Seasonal and interannual BVOC emission variations
Task Improve simulation of seasonal and
interannual variations in BVOC emissions Expected
Result Will improve future emission estimates.
Will also help to identify sources (biogenic
sources have different seasonal trends than
anthropogenic) Status Active project.
Observations during 2006 Should be completed by
end of 2006.
8
Improve BVOC emission estimates for shrubs, grass
and crops
Task Characterize BVOC emissions from
shrublands, grasslands and croplands. Expected
Result Will improve BVOC emission estimates for
these regions Status Active project.
Observations during 2006. Should be completed by
end of 2006.
9
Soil NO emissions
Task MEGAN is currently using the Williams et
al. 1992 approach. This should be updated at
least using Yenger and Levy (1995) approach. More
sophisticated models are being used in Europe and
may also be considered. Expected Result
Generally improved global and regional NO
emissions Status Uncertain- hope to initiate
this during 2006
