Title: ILC Controls in CD

1
ILC Controls in CD
2
CD involved on 2 fronts
  • Global Effort design of the ILC controls system
  • FNAL involvement started at Snowmass
  • Prior to that design was based on NLC and TTF
  • Part of global collaboration -
  • Close collaboration with ANL, SLAC and AD/TD
  • Produced BCD in Fall 2005 now working on RDR
  • First group to give Cost estimates to GDE
  • FNAL FY07 request for global controls effort 2.5
    FTE
  • ILCTA Controls test areas needed for cavity
    testing
  • Work in progress for over a year.
  • Has been ad hoc
  • SLAC and ANL interested in collaborating a low
    level
  • FNAL FY07 request for ILTCA controls 11 FTE
  • Efforts managed jointly (at least budget
    authority) past spring
  • Margaret Votava task lead, Mike Kucera
    (AD/Controls) deputy

3
Global - RDR
  • First pass at WBS and costing for RDR meeting in
    Vancouver
  • CD provided experience and expertise in
    electronics packaging, network architecture,
commodity computing, data acquisition, and data
    storage.
  • CD worked with other divisions to provide LLRF,
    architecture, and remote operations expertise.
  • Effort is very collaborative among ANL, FNAL, and
    SLAC
  • KEK participates in weekly meetings (horrible
    time difference)
  • DESY on and off
  • FNAL Personnel
  • AD Brian Chase (LLRF), Jim Patrick (architecture)
  • CD Patty McBride, Vince Pavlicek, Margaret
    Votava, Gustavo Cancelo
  • PPD Erik Gottschalk (remote operations)

4
Global RD
  • ATCA
  • Just purchased ATCA crate to be delivered
  • Goals joint effort with ILC instrumentation
  • Gain practical experience in technology
  • Test viability as a technology for
    instrumentation
  • Build a ATCA digitizer board for use at NML
  • Primarily AD effort (Charlie Briegel and Alexei
    Sememov)
  • FY07 RD proposals
  • High availability studies
  • Gap analysis study evaluating existing
    control system
  • Timing and phase distribution

5
ILCTA - Controls Management
  • Budget, Effort reporting, Project planning, etc.
  • Workforce very distributed
  • AD horizontal test facility, cryo
  • CD A0/TTF test facility, infrastructure
  • PPD cryo, epics expertise
  • TD vertical test facility
  • Difficult to manage
  • Some staffing is best effort people only have
time to do it on the side.
  • Controls system schizophrenia
  • DOOCS, EPICS, Labview, Matlab
  • Visions/priorities from the top not always clear,
    sometimes conflicting
  • Communication weak
  • Not successfully utilizing SLAC personnel nor
ANL, but ANL may have to back out of ILCTA due to
    lack of funds.

6
ILCTA Controls system choices
  • ACNET
  • Not seriously considered a choice, but still
    highly favored by AD personnel
  • DOOCS
  • Provides interfaces to other controls system
    including epics
  • Hardware coming from TTF will most likely have
    DOOCS interfaces already available.
  • EPICS
  • Provides interfaces to other controls system
    except DOOCS
  • Utility provided by DESY to do this, but needs
    upgrading.
  • On our todo list, would be nice to get ANL help
  • APACS
  • Underlying proprietary software used for MDB and
    NML cryo
  • IFIX
  • Commercial SCADA system will be used to
    commission MDB cryo
  • Engineering development tools
  • Preferred method (by test stand users) to do
    curve fitting, data analysis
  • Labview, Matlab. Licenses are expensive,
    especially if floating

7
ILCTA - Committees
  • Helps to provide consistency across test areas
  • Electronic Logbook
  • 8 member team, cross divisional, cross lab (SLAC,
ANL). Headed by Rob Kutschke (CD)
  • Completed evaluation end of June
  • Recommended CRL (ie, CRL 6 months development
    work)
  • Awaiting cross divisional agreement on support
  • Data Management
  • Just forming. Headed by Peter Kasper (AD)
  • Started as an idea to manage data produced at
FNAL ILCTA test areas, but has grown to be
repository of production data for all cavity data
    produced in the US.
  • Something ready in 6 months

8
ILCTA A0
  • oldest of the areas, Several components from
    DESY
  • Done on a shoestring budget, HW and SW done
piecemeal, includes some components from DESY.
  • ACNET cryo
  • DOOCS LLRF, BPM, HRM, Signal Generator (GPIB)
    (FANL/CD)
  • EPICS
  • photoinjector, 3.9 GHz coupler conditioning,
capture cavity 2 (before) - (mostly CD)
  • Sequencer for coupler conditioning not yet done,
    both in DOOCS and EPICS
  • Who is in charge of coupler conditioning across
    test areas?
  • Ron Rechenmacher (CD), Luciano Piccoli (CD)

9
ILCTA MDB
  • horizontal test facility and coupler processing
  • Including capture cavity 2
  • Cryo is EPICS based (providing human interface to
    APACS)
  • Driving effort for EPICS only
  • Wrote EPICS interface to LLRF (previously only
    DOOCS) (FNAL/AD)
  • EPICS Interfaces for
  • Timing board (FNAL/AD)
  • Interlocks (FNAL/PPD)
  • Signal generator?
  • Dennis Nicklaus (AD), Paul Joireman (AD), Sharon
Lackey (AD), Vladimir Sirotenko (PPD), Geoff
    Savage (PPD)

10
ILCTA IB1, NML
  • IB1 (mostly TD)
  • Cryo is IFIX. Might consider EPICS
  • Headed for EPICS only
  • Will use LLRF EPICS port from AD
  • Extensive Labview expertise
  • Jerzy Nogiec (TD), Dennis Shpakov (TD)
  • NML (mostly not done -) )
  • Requirements still being discussed
  • Cryo modeled after MDB (EPICS)
  • Photoinjector (with DOOCS interface) will not
    move?
  • ATCA digitizer board test site

11
FY07 Goals
  • Global group
  • RDR complete
  • Big strides in TDR
  • Understand viable control system alternatives
  • ATCA outlook
  • ILCTA
  • Vertical and Horizontal test stands are fully
    automated
  • Controls for cryomodule test facility (NML) is
    designed.
  • Data management system/Elogbook is in place for
    all test areas
