• There are about 12 sub-groups of the Yoruba
  language.
• Oduduwa is the legendary founder of the Yoruba
  Nation.

Language

• The Yoruba language is spoken by almost 40
  million people in African countries outside of
  Nigeria such as Benin, Togo, and also in Cuba
  and Brazil.
• The first appearance of written Yoruba was in
  1819, but it existed much earlier than that.
• It is also under the Kwa language.

• The Yoruba people have a very complex belief
  system.
• It has been said that 401 dieties exist in the
  Yoruba religion.
• Many names exist for the religion e.g. Shango,
  Santeria, Oyotunji, Idigine.
• It has been said that Yoruba is the oldest widely
  practised religion that still exist.
• Many Yoruba have converted to Islam or
  Christianity.
