3HOW DID THE MOON FORM?
The Moon was born when
1. A Mars-sized object smashed into the young
Earth.
2. It scattered a huge cloud of material into
space.
3. This eventually came together to from the
Moon.
4THE MOONS SURFACE
1. Craters The surface of the Moon is covered
with craters that vary in size from small pits to
giant basins more than 200 km across. Because the
Moon with no atmosphere to protect its surface,
all objects hurtling toward it make a deep impact.
52. Seas The dark areas of the Moon were once seas
of molten lava. They were caused by huge flows of
lava from volcanoes. Now they are solid plains of
hardened lava.
63. Ancient rocks The oldest rocks on the Moon are
about 4600 million years old.
4. The temperature The temperature on the sunny
side of the Moon is 100 degree Celsius. In the
shadow it is -150 degree Celsius.
