• 5. The heaviest president at 332 pounds, Taft
  struggled all his adult life with a weight
  problem. He got stuck in the White House bathtub
  and had to have an oversized version brought in
  for his use.
• 6. William Howard Taft was the first president to
  own a car at the White House.
• 7. Arizona became a state on February 14, 1912.
  Making Taft the first President of 48 states.

• Taft (skillful administrator and judge), but had
  a slow approach to problem solving. (led to
  conflict with the progressives)
• Taft wanted to lower tariffs but he faced some
  issues. (Speaker of the House, Joseph G. Cannon
  democrat)

• Republican (progressives) campaign against
  Cannon. However, they became upset with Taft when
  he stopped the campaign (however, Cannon did
  allow the bill to lower tariffs pass)
• Payne Aldrich Tariff (cut tariffs hardly at
  all) raised some tariffs instead of lowering
  them. Taft had further alienated progressives.

• Gifford Pinchot (chief of U.S. forestry service)
  charged Ballenger had tried to turn over valuable
  public lands in Alaska to private syndicates for
  his own profit.
• Taft fired Pinchot for insubordination
  (disobedience)

• Children's Bureau fight child labor.
• Progressives convinced Roosevelt to enter
  politics and attempt to replace Taft as the
  Republican nominee for president in the election
  of 1912.
