6From problem to solution
- Problem
- 3 billion people
- over-exploitation of woody vegetation
- shortage of firewood
- firewood price
- Other impacts of firewood use
- deforestation, desertification
- air pollution (cities)?
- health problems (women with lung problems)?
- burns (small children)?
Solution - integrated solar cooking including
- maximum use of solar energy at the
lowest possible cost
7Integrated solar cooking
1. improved wood stoves
2. a solar cooker
3. heat retention
8Maximum use of solar energy at the lowest
possible price
Panel cooker (CooKit) 10
Box cooker 100
Parabolic cooker 300
9KoZon promotes the CooKit
- CooKit selling points
- cheap
- efficient
- local production
- Requisites for solar cooking
- CooKit
- black pot, 4 to 5 liter
- heat resistant plastic bag
10Local production of CooKits
- Construction materials
- corrugated cardboard
- aluminium foil
- glue
- hand tools
Bamako, Mali
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
11CooKit it cooks, bakes and pasteurizes
- slow cooking (simmer)?
- meat, fish, vegetables, sauces
- pastas, rice
- bread, cake
- baby meals
- pasteurization of water and milk
12Project countries
Burkina Faso 274.200 km² 14 miljoen
inh. Mali 1.240.000 km² 12 million
inh. Niger Tchad
13Projects cooperation with local organisations
- Mali AFIMA (Association des Femmes Ingénieurs du
Mali)? - Mali AMAFH (AssociationMalienne des Femmes
- Handicapées)?
- Tchad TchadSolaire
14Project with AMAFH, Bamako, Mali
2005 training of 3 groups of 40 handicapped
women
- Training - 2 days - participants
contribute - 2 CooKit sets
- Cost
- - total cost 6.000
- - one group of 40 women 2.000
15Extra advantages of the CooKit for handicapped
women a) lack of mobility no problemb) less
risk of burns c) strong positive psychological
impact
16Evaluation
- Factors for acceptation and adoption
- perception
- social factors
- technical factors
17Technical evaluation
- Advantages
- simple and cheap
- functional (many dishes)
- saves firewood
- protects nature and environment
- healthy
- local production
- Desadvantages
- 2-4 hours sunshine
- woodfire as permanent back-up
- limited quantity (4 to 5 l)?
- frying/roasting not possible
- not all materials locally available
- limited lifespan
18Integrated solar cooking
1. improved wood stoves
2. a solar cooker
3. heat retention

- Results
- 4.900 households with two or more CooKits
- all women and girls over 15 trained in solar
cooking - Impact personal safety, less quarrels, easy
cooking, time to spend, no smoke

26Social evaluation (Gorom-Gorom, Burkina Faso,
2003)?
- young tailor, bachelor
- . We men have a large problem with cooking in
this province. Even if you are hungry, you can
not go to the kitchen to make food yourself. We
young men have to wait for women and be patient
when the food is taking time to be cooked by
women or girls. To be honest with you, the
tradition doesnt refuse men to cook. We wait for
women because its difficult for us to cook with
firewood. Its why the solar material you bring
could help us not to depend anymore on women for
cooking."
27Social evaluation (Gorom-Gorom, Burkina Faso,
2003)?
- Married woman from a large family about the size
of the Cookit - I bought the CooKit. I used it only once
just to test. Its not possible for me to cook
food with it for all people of my compound. I
decided to give it to my brother who is a
bachelor and living in the north of this village.
I feel sad because I bought it but couldnt use
it."
28Social evaluation (Gorom-Gorom, Burkina Faso,
2003)?
- Married woman from a small family about family
planning - . You know, I have two babies in two years. In
this province, we dont care about the number of
children we have. Its God who gives children and
takes care of them. I understand later that we
women struggle too much and suffer to give food
to all the children we have. I welcomed all the
organisations that are helping women of this
village to plan the births of kids, but me I
dont like to take that pill. If we can integrate
the CooKit in our life style, it means we are
aware that its only useful for small families.
Before we do anything, my husband and I need to
remember that our CooKit could be used for a
certain number of people. Its another way of
planning children.
