Animal Kingdom

• Animals can be classified based on their
  similarities.
• Animals are broken up into two groups-
  vertebrates and invertebrates
• Vertebrates- Animals with a backbone or spinal
  column. All these animals are in the phyla
  Chordata and the subphyla Vertebrata
• Invertebrates Animals without a backbone or
  spinal column

Vertebrates

• These animals are classified into 5 phyla
  (phylum).
• Mammals- have hair and produce milk for their
  young
• Birds- have feathers which keep them warm and
  help them to fly
• Reptiles- have scaly skin and lay their eggs on
  land
• Amphibian begin life in water but live out
  adulthood on land
• Fish have scales and live their entire lives in
  water.

Invertebrates

• These animals are classified into 7 phyla
  (phylum).
• Sponges- these are the living kind and live in
  oceans (jellyfish, anemones, and coral are
  examples)
• Worms- these live on land
• Mollusks- soft bodied animals like the octopus
  and squid
• Echinoderms- have body parts in 5. examples
  include starfish, sand dollars
• Arthropods- skeleton is on the outside of the
  body
• Crustaceans are a sub class. Example include
  crabs, lobsters
• Insects- have six legs and three body segments
• Arachnids- have eight legs
