4
Questions for Fingerprint CSI Activity
  • Inked fingerprint references
  • Did our percentages match the known (65L, 35W
    and 5 A)?
  • What are three reasons that they may not match?
  • Design an experiment to test your explanation.
  • Evidence activity
  • Can you determine with certainty the individual
    that left the print?
  • What are the criteria you used?
  • Are there level 2, minutia characteristics that
you can see (and document) which lead you to
believe these are from a specific individual? IF
so, document the minutia and label them using
    your notes from the lecture.
  • If not, can you narrow down the individuals that
    may have left the prints?

5
Questions for CSI activity
  • Did you protect the scene? How did you set up a
    barrier?
  • Did you interview any witnesses? First responder?
  • What did you find (evidence)? How many pieces of
evidence were there? Who collected it?
  • Did you adequately sketch the scene for
    reconstruction? What measurement method(s) did
you use? Did you remember to document the tools?
Do you have enough detail in your notes?
  • Did you properly fill out the chain of custody?

6
Measurement Activity Questions
  • Do all your measurements agree? Why or why not?
  • Do all the measurements between groups agree?
    Why or why not?
  • If no, what are 3 reasons which may cause the
    discrepancy?
  • For one of the reasons, design an experiment to
    test your hypothesis.
  • Is there enough documentation for you to
reconstruct the location of the crime scene.
  • Describe 3 ways in which you believe you could
improve the precision of your measurements.
  • Can these measurements be used in court? What
information would you need to document?

7
Fingerprint Classification
  • Whorl includes Central Pocket Loop and Double
    Loop

Fingerprint Exercise- Part I
  • Create fingerprint exemplars for each member of
    your team
  • Using the ink pads and fingerprint cards, roll
all your fingers on the appropriate sections of
    the cards.
  • Be sure to fill out the information at the top.
  • Classify each of your 10 fingers as Loop, Arch,
    Whorl or Accidental
  • Today- Reclassify fingerprints using confirmed
    information and retally totals

9
All of these are Whorls
10
FINGERPRINT LAB
  • PART TWO
  • C. Your Inked or pencil Prints
  • What fingerprint patterns ?
  • Enlarged print (at least one characteristic)
  • Super Glue- information only
  • PART ONE TODAY
  • A. Black Powder
  • Demo
  • Smooth overhead
  • B. Magnetic Powder
  • Practice on your own right index print
  • 2 different surfaces
  • Smooth glass slide
  • Rough Foam coffee cup

11
E. Evidence Sample
  • Each team has an evidence item
  • Hidden from view, have one of your team members
lay your latent print on the item
  • Once you have the item ready with a print AND all
of your reference fingerprint cards, raise your
hand to switch with another team
  • Each team will process the item for fingerprints
    Use magnetic powder development. Photograph
    before and after development.
  • Examine the reference fingerprint cards to see if
you can eliminate or include any member of the
    team that provided the evidence.
  • Identify the class and individual characteristics
that you utilized in your analysis
