2Who am I?
- I was originally born in Hong Kong when it was a
British Colony. - I left Hong Kong to study in the U.S.A. in 1968
- I obtained my Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and
Master of Science (M.S.) degree from the Iowa
State University in Ames, Iowa. - I obtained my doctorate (Ph. D.) from the
University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). - I am a U.S. citizen and live in San Luis Obispo,
California.

- I am a tenured professor in the Computer Science
Department of the California Polytechnic State
University, San Luis Obispo. - I am the author of a textbook and over 20
professional articles.

- I have one son Marlin, 25. He is a software
engineer working in San Diego. - I am visiting SEEU as a
- U. S. Fulbright Scholar.
- I am staying in Skopje and commuting to Tetovo.

15The Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program
- The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends
800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each
year. - Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide
variety of academic and professional fields. - I am one of 10 grantees in the Computer Science
discipline for the year of 2006-2007. - I am one of three grantees that are currently
visiting the Republic of Macedonia the other two
(Dr. Steve Foulke and Dr. Robert Boldin) are
hosted by the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University
in Skopje.

17How I became a U.S. Fulbright Scholar
- I applied to the Fulbright Program in the summer
of 2005 (see announcement on the next slide) - I applied for an academic leave (at reduced
salary) from my university contingent on
receiving the award. - I was notified of the award by the Council for
International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) in
April 2006. - I attended a 2-day orientation session in
Washington D. C. in July 2006 - http//www.exchanges.state.gov/education/fulbrigh
t/orientation/eur/) - I contacted SEEU about my plans soon thereafter.
- My academic leave started in Jan. 2007 I arrived
in Skopje on Jan. 29.
18My Fulbright Objectives
- It is my belief that global collaboration is a
requisite for Computer Scientists, and especially
for Computer Science students when they enter
into the workforce. - It is my hope to contribute to the building of a
relationship with the community in (the Republic
of Macedonia) to pave the way to future academic,
research, or professional collaboration. - I also expect to gain a different perspective for
the teaching of Computer Science and the
development of a curriculum in Computer Science.
It will be of interest to observe the culture at
the prospective host institution and compare the
quality of teaching, students, and laboratory
facilities between the two universities (SEEU and
Cal Poly) and the two countries.
