Title: NAMES-ME:
1NAMES-ME New Approaches to Managing Ecosystem
Services in the Marine Environment
Seminar 1 The Ecosystem Approach and Management
of the Marine Environment Aim to consider the
concepts and practical implications of the
Ecosystem Approach as a framework for Marine
Management Concept paper The Ecosystem Approach
and Management of the Marine Environment. Ed
Maltby and Sue Kidd Respondents Adam Barker and
Leonie Robinson
2Overarching aim for the day
- The opening seminar is intended to bring people
new to the Ecosystem Approach up to speed,
advance thinking about the concept generally, and
develop a multidisciplinary perspective on its
practical application to management of the marine
environment with particular reference to the UK
3- General discussion themes for the morning
- Transdisciplinarity speaking a common language
understanding the variety of disciplinary
perceptions on the Ecosystem Approach - Key themes foundations, fundamental concepts
and practical considerations of the Ecosystem
Approach in the marine environment (re. Marine
Spatial Planning as a framework for coherent
management)
4- Group discussion aims for the afternoon
- with reference to the seven areas of coherence
and priorities for action - Consider the aspirations of an Ecosystem Approach
in offering an ideal framework for planning and
management of the marine environment learning
from the EA in other contexts (with reference to
the Marine Bill). - Identify the potential barriers and challenges
(data, research, dialogue, policy, operational)
to achieving these aspirations
5(No Transcript)
6Overall aim to critically evaluate emerging
approaches to marine ecosystem management from a
transdisciplinary perspective and to develop
future research and practice capacity in this area
7- Consider Defra strategic goals (and vision and
perhaps with reference to the 7 themes of
coherence) - Aspirations of ecosystem approach-based marine
management framework - Barriers to achieving the goals
