Prince Henry the Navigator
  • Prince Henry the Navigator seldom left Portugal,
    but he helped make it possible for the first
    Europeans to explore Africa.
  • Henry wanted to find a water route to India.
  • Henry set up a school for sailors to learn the
    secrets of the ocean.
  • Henry also employed cartographers who created the
    most sophisticated maps of their time.

Christopher Columbus, Italian
  • Determined the Earth was round by studying
    Ptolemy
  • Looking for shorter route to far east for silks
    and spices
  • First asked the king of Portugal for financing
  • 1484 asked Spanish monarchs and was rebuffed
  • 1492 persisted with Spanish and voyages were
    financed because the monarch saw both financial
    and religious advantages
  • 4 trips lasted from 1492 1504

  • Sailors tried to mutiny but he crushed it
  • 1520 found a southwest passage that took him
    around the tip of South America named it Strait
    of Magellan
  • 1521 reached the island of Guam where he died
  • Only one of his 5 ships returned with 19
    crewmembers and valuable cargo
