2 Background Information
- Henry Spencer Moore was born on July 30th, 1898
to Raymond Spencer Moore and Mary Baker, in
Castleford, England. - Moore was the seventh child of eight.
- His father was determined that all his children
should be well educated.
3 Education
- Henry Moore began school by going to pre-school
and elementary school in Castleford. - In 1910 he received a scholarship, like several
of his siblings, to Castleford Secondary School. - During his time at this school he started to
carve wood and model clay. - While attending this school, at age eleven, he
decided to become a sculptor influenced by
Michelangelos achievements. - Another influence of Moore was his art teacher
Miss Gostick. She made art become a part of
Moores life outside of the classroom. - Moore passed the Cambridge Leaving Certificate in
1915, qualifying him for further education
4 Education
- Moores father didnt believe an artist would be
a suitable profession for his son. He would have
much rather him be a teacher. - Moore taught at Castleford Secondary School at
the age of 16. - From 1919-1921 Moore attended Leeds School of Art
- Then from 1921-1925 he attended the Royal School
of Art. Moore taught here from 1925-1932. - From 1932-1939 he taught at the Chelsea School of
Art.
5Accomplishments
- In 1924 Moore was awarded the Royal College of
Art travelling scholarship. In 1925 he went to
Italy for six months to study the Old Masters
including, Giotto, Masaccio, Michelangelo,
Donatello, and Giovanni Pisano. - In 1928 Moore received his first public
commission to produce a relief for Charles
Holdens new London Transport headquarters. - The relief was followed by an exhibition in the
Warren Gallery in London, and a second show in
1931 at Leicester Galleries.
6World Events During Moores Life
- The Great War happened the year Moore left
school. The headmaster of his school asked him to
design a Roll of Honour for the names of all
the former schoolboys who were marching off to
war - In 1917, at the age of eighteen, Moore was
enlisted in the Civil Service Rifles, 15th London
Regiment, and took part in the battle of Cambrai.
Here he suffered a gas attack and was in the
hospital for two months. After recovering he
became and Army Physical Training Instructor.
7King and Queen
This sculpture, the one on the title page, is
called King and Queen. It is a made out of
bronze. Moore sculpted this in about the year
1952-1953.
8Two Piece Reclining Figure
This piece is also a bronze figure. Made in two
pieces the points in 1969-1970 and the cast in
1973.
9Seated Woman
This sculpture was made out of bronze in
1956-1957.
10 Upright Motive No. 1 Glenkiln
Cross
This sculpture was made out of bronze. Moore
worked on this from 1955-1956.
11The End of Moores Life
- In honor of Henry Moore there were exhibitions on
his birthday. - 70th birthday (1968) Tate Gallery in London
- 80th birthday (1978) Serpentine Gallery in London
and the City Art Gallery in Bradford.
Henry Moore died on August 31st 1986, at the age
of 88.
