6 Large Figure in a Shelter 1985, Bronze This
sculpture was one of Moore's final works, as well
as his largest, and was cast in the year of his
death. It relates to the series of helmet
sculptures, which Moore returned to throughout
his life, the earliest example being from
1939-40. Moore's continuing interest in the idea
of an inner form protected by an outer form (a
theme also seen in the Large Upright
Internal/External Form) is here demonstrated with
a large bronze form encircling a figure. Large
Figure in a Shelter weighs over 20 tons and was
cast at the Morris Singer Foundry in Basingstoke.
A second cast of this work stands in the Peace
Park in Guernica. The sculpture has a lacquered
surface which means that the colour of the bronze
will not change as the surface of the metal is
protected from the elements
