Dough Dolls The Origin
  • Dough Dolls began in ancient rituals. When
villagers didn't have animal sacrifice to worship
the Gods, they created a new method which was to
make animals with dough. It was not only the best
way to worship the Gods but also to express the
    devotion of the villagers.

8
  • Traditional dough dolls are made of flour,
glutinous rice, food coloring and water. The
pieces of dough used to be edible, but now they
are not. Dough dolls now are made from the
mixture of inedible materials and coloring. As a
result, they aren't made to be eaten but to be
    appreciated.

Maltose
  • By Joanne, Helen, Patina and Sophia

17
  • The production of maltose in germinating cereals,
such as barley, is an important part of the
brewing process. When barley is malted, it is
brought into a condition in which the
concentration of maltose has been maximized.
Metabolism of maltose by yeast during
fermentation then leads to the production of
    ethanol and carbon dioxide

18
  • Maltose can be broken down into two glucose
molecules by hydrolysis. In living organisms, the
enzyme maltase can achieve this very rapidly. In
the laboratory, heating with a strong acid for
several minutes will produce the same result.

Rope Jumping
  • Group member Candy, Shan, Alan, Daniel

24
Origin
  • Rope jumping is one of the Chinese cultural
activities. It first appeared in the history of
China about 1,300 years ago. Rope jumping has
passed down from the Tang Dynasty to the present.

25
Benefits Guidelines
  • It can improve body coordination, and avoid the
knee injury which may occur during running.
  • Warm up for 5 to 10 minutes, and then stretch
    gently before jumping.
  • Jump on a floor surface that is even and thus
    limits friction.
  • Try not to jump high and land hard.

26
  • Relax your shoulders and turn the rope with
    wrists.
  • Have patience. Start slow, and increase slowly.

Taiwanese Glove puppetry
  • Members Ron, Michael, Howard, Lawrence, Herbert

28
The History of Glove puppetry
  • Glove puppetry is a type of local opera
using cloth puppets that originated during the
17th century in Quanzhou or Zhangzhou, in China's
Fujian province. Glove Puppetry has been
    historically practiced in Quanzhou, Zhongzhou,
Chaozhou in Guangdong, Taiwan, and other parts of
    southern China.

  • The puppet's head uses wood carved into
the shape of a hollow human head. The puppets
head, palms and feet are made of wood, but its
torso and limbs consist entirely of cloth
costumes. At the time of the performance, a
gloved hand enters the puppet's costume and makes
it perform. In previous years, the puppets used
in this type of performance strongly resembled
"cloth sacks," hence the name, which literally
    means "cloth bag opera."

32
  • Glove Puppetry performances, similar to
those other types of Chinese opera, are divided
into a first half and a second half show. During
the first half, known as the "show platform," the
audience is shown a demonstration by a master
puppeteer on the stage. The second half consists
of the puppet master, the orchestra, and the
    spoken parts.

33
  • Several key points of a show to be
appreciated include the dexterity of the master
puppeteer's manipulation of the puppet, the
accompaniment of the orchestra, and the poetic
spoken parts of the voice actors. With few
exceptions, from traditional Glove Puppetry to
modern performances, human vocal music and
    operatic singing is rarely heard.
