1
POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION AND
SUPPORTS (PBIS)

  • Lisa Anderson

2
PBIS
  • What is it ?
  • PBIS is an approach to understanding the who
and the why of a challenging behavior.
  • It views the system, setting, and/or the skill
deficiency as the problem, not the individual.
  • It helps students identify and replace behavior
    problems.
  • It is not a quick fix method, it has a goal
    with results that last.
  • It looks at expectations for the future.

3
PBIS- Why use it?
  • It is not your traditional approach to behavior
    management, where administration and teachers
    have all control.
  • This approach helps students regulate theor own
behavior and gives them functional control of
    their own well being.

4
PBIS- What it can do!
  • It makes an individual
  • More socially aware and appropriate
  • More able to predict and understand what and why
    certain things are happening
  • More able to communicate likes and dislikes

5
Strategies to use
  • Individual Level
  • Give the student a self-regulation checklist so
    he/she can monitor behavior
  • Role-play socially appropriate behaviors
  • Identify specific expectations and
    reinforcements.
  • Create a quiet cool down area

6
Strategies
  • Classroom Level
  • Use cooperative group structure.
  • Adapt curriculum and instruction to match with
interests and styles of the students.
  • Make accommodations with the assignments.

7
Strategies
  • School- Wide
  • Develop and institute a peer mediation program.
  • Use staff to facilitate group meetings with
    students that have similar issues.
  • Have a selection of positive extracurricular
    programs.
  • Get parents involved

8
How do we know it is working?
  • What is the number of disciplinary write ups?
  • Get feedback from staff and students.
  • Send out surveys to parents.
  • Observe/monitor the school atmosphere.
