• IS-136 is an Interim Standard for TDMA wireless
  phones.
• Created by IEEE along with ATT
• Currently being revised to allow for new
  technology

• Packetized data
• Digital Control or overhead channel that sends
  data back and forth to phone.
• Digital Voice channel for voice conversations

How is IS-136 related to IT?

• Packetized data format lends itself easily to
  being a air interface for consumer
• Consumer demand has been driving the development
  of wireless data interface

What is the future of IS-136?

• Wireless phones will become hand-held data
  terminals
• Wireless phones will get more user friendly with
  features such as plasma displays and larger
  keypads
• New technologies being developed for Broad Band
  Air Interface to support larger data volume.
