Early Observations
  • Most educators agree that student services play
an important role in higher education. What this
    means is not clear!
  • Both online learners and traditional classroom
students want to access student services via the
    Web.
  • The Web offers an unprecedented opportunity to
develop an integrated set of student services
designed from the students point of view-- which
is not necessarily congruent with the
    institutions structure.

15
Early Observations
  • Weaving a web of student services requires a
holistic vision developed by a cross-functional
rather than a silo team that might just
    Web-enize current practices.
  • Student Information Systems (SIS) and portals
play key roles in the development of Web-based
    student services.
  • Institutions must focus first on WHAT a new
Web-based service should do. The HOW (technology
solution) should enable not define this vision.

16
Early Observations
  • Distance education--once an adjunct activity of
the campus--is coming into the mainstream. This
is affecting campus structures and how student
    services fit into them.
  • Technology must enhance not replace the human
    touch.

17
Challenges
  • Limitations in IT staff time and expertise in the
    development phase.
  • Insufficient funds for technology purchases and
    their implications (e.g., training
    maintenance).
  • Realistic staff support for a learning anytime
anywhere environment now and in the future.
  • Willingness to think differently.
  • Turf.
  • Intellectual property.
  • Time.
