Title: Moon Madness

1
Moon Madness
  • Eclipses
  • Phases

2
Eclipses
  • Only occur when the moon, earth and sun are in a
    straight line
  • In a lunar eclipse the earth is between the sun
    and the moon
  • In a solar eclipse the moon is between the sun
    and the earth

Solar Eclipse The moon is passing between the
earth and the sun
3
Solar Eclipse
4
Solar Eclipse (Total)
  • The moon comes between the Earth and the sun
  • What you see is the corona of the sun with the
central disk blocked by the moon

5
Time Lapse
  • Eclipse can take several hours
  • Sun moves in sky while moon moves across sun

the moon

Types of Solar Eclipses
  • Total Solar Eclipse occurs when the umbra of the
Moon's shadow touches a region on the surface of
    the Earth.
  • Partial Solar Eclipse occurs when the penumbra of
the Moon's shadow passes over a region on the
    Earth's surface.
  • Annular Solar Eclipse occurs when a region on the
Earth's surface is in line with the umbra, but
the distances are such that the tip of the umbra
does not reach the Earth's surface.

Orbital Motion in a Solar Eclipse
9
Total eclipses of the sun are visible over only a
small portion of the Earth

12
Transit of Venus
  • Venus passes between the Earth and the sun
  • Venus blocks part of the suns light (the moving
    black dot)

13
Lunar Eclipse
  • From time to time, the Moon (or a portion of it)
enters the Earth's shadow in what is known as a
lunar eclipse .The Moon is dimmed partially or
almost completely, depending on whether it passes
through the less dark part of the Earth's shadow,
the penumbra , or the darker part, the umbra .

16
Why we dont have eclipses all the time
17
Why the moon looks red during an eclipse
  • Sunlight is refracted and scattered by the
Earths atmosphere, so even during totality a
small amount of light hits the moon
  • Its red because shorter wavelengths are more
easily blocked by dust particles (also why
    sunsets are red)

18
Phases of the Moon
  • Waxing--more of the moon is visible
  • Waning--less of the moon is visible

19
Phases of the Moon
  • Waxing--more of the moon is visible
  • Waning--less of the moon is visible
