Bartons Bagels

• A small bagel shop in downtown San Anselmo
• People of all ages visit to try these tasty
  homemade bagels made fresh daily
• Even before we began to help Barton in the
  greening process, they were already quite
  environmentally friendly
• Bartons is very well known
• We felt that they could set a positive example in
  our community

Process

• We decided to green a business because we thought
  it could influence the people who go there
• We chose to green Bartons Bagels because many
  people of all ages go there we thought it would
  help influence the customers
• After choosing a business we had to see what
  practices were already being done and which could
  be changed

• We met with Barton, the owner of the shop,
  several times and went over the green packet with
  him
• We looked at what habits they were already
  performing and which ones they could change to
  become more environmentally friendly

• Barton and his employees began to change their
  practices
• We completed an energy audit to see the money
  that would be saved by these changes
• We brought them biodegradable soap and TP to
  start them off
• We wrote a business pledge saying they will
  change their practices

Changes

• Looked over packet looked for things that could
  be changed and that were already being done
• Some things he could change right away-others
  would take time to change

Improvements

• Changing from incandescent lighting to florescent
  lighting
• Biodegradable soap, recycled toilet paper, paper
  towels and napkins
• Never use heating or cooling system

Difficulties

• Before deciding to green Bartons we were going to
  green a school.
• 1st we attempted to green the whole Tam district
  (but that was too big)
• 2nd we tried to green Tam high schoolthat didnt
  work out
• - 3rd we tried to green Redwood
  high schoolthey werent very
  interested

• The first 3 attempts set us back behind schedule
  quite a bit (we managed to make up the time)
• intense scheduling issues with us Barton
• constant miss communications with Barton group
  members

Conclusion

• This project helped us see what little changes
  can do to help. Bartons Bagels has not yet
  received their Green Certificate but they are
  well on their way. Bartons was an already green
  business that made even more changes to become
  more energy and water efficient and decrease
  pollution outputs.
