A Pixel-Based Tracker to Probe the
Quark-Gluon Plasma at PHENIX

OVERVIEW

• Colaboration between Los Alamos National
  Laboratory and Fermilab.
• Funded by Los Alamos National Laboratory.
• Design tracking stations in a forward tracking
  sector in the PHENIX(1) experiment at RHIC(2) .
• The tracker will be used to identify Charm and
  Beauty quarks that are produced early in the
  heavy ion collisions.
• The detectors, based on an Atlas/BTeV design,
  comprise approximately two million pixel elements.

(1)The PHENIX Experiment is the largest of the
four experiments currently taking data at the
Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).PHENIX,
the Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction
eXperiment.
(2)The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a world-class
scientific research facility that began operation
in 2000, following 10 years of development. and
construction.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Pixel Module HDI modification on existing
design. Pixel Module Test Board modification
on existing design. Pixel Plane PCB new
design. It requires intensive interaction with
same mechanical team we were working with for
BTeV ?good work relationship. Test Stand
integration of the new PTA card, it will consume
most of the effort. Five Tested Pixel Modules
quality will depend on bump-bonding and sensors.
Cant promise working modules.

BE TESTED.

The analysis code was written by Sergey Butsyk
from Los Alamos National Laboratory and is
integrated on the main code.

SUMMARY

• THE PROJECT HAS EVOLVING VERY FAST, SOME PARTS
  ARE ALREADY REACHING COMPLETION.
• THE PARTS THAT ARE IN INITIAL STEPS OF DESIGN ARE
  DEPENDENT OF FURTHER INTERACTION WITH LOS ALAMOS.
• THE TEST STAND IS ALREADY PRODUCING RESULTS AND
  EVEN BEING USED TO CHARACTERIZE THE NEW FPIX 2.1.
• THE NEXT STEP WILL BE THE TEST OF THE PIXEL COMBO
  AND IN PARALELL THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PIXEL
  PLANE.
