Physical Activity Levels
  • High proportions of children are active at
    recommended levels BUT significant minority take
    little or no PA AND many of these are girls.
  • Sharp decline in PA among girls after age 10.
  • Other low active groups include low
    socio-economic BME overweight/obese.
  • School PE/sport generally increasing active
    travel to school declining.

  • social pressure to conform (e.g. wanting to fit
    in)
  • negative experience of the school environment
    (e.g. PE kit showers)
  • negative experiences of sports and/or facilities
  • having to perform (display competence) in public
    and in front of peers
  • being forced to compete with others
  • fear of sexual or racial harassment

  • social and family influences (e.g. active
    siblings supportive parents)
  • enjoyment and socialisation (e.g. opportunity to
    extend friendship networks)
  • intrinsic and extrinsic rewards (e.g. a means to
    a socially desirable body type)
  • demonstrating competence (e.g. receiving praise
    and encouragement increased confidence)
  • Successful behaviour change is more likely if the
    intervention targets girls alone, is aimed at
    older girls, and focuses solely on PA
