  • Fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Sprain
  • Strain

FRACTUREis a brake in bone tissue including
chips and cracks
  • Open fracture- the broken ends tear the skin and
    surrounding tissue leaving an open wound

Fractures continued
  • Closed fracture- the skin is unbroken
  • Compound fracture- a bone broken in two or more
    spots

Dislocation
  • A separation or a displacement of a bone from its
    normal position in the joint
  • Joint- formed by the end of two or more bones
    coming together at one place

Sprains Ligament
  • Partial or complete tearing of a ligament
  • Fibrous band that holds bones together

Strains
  • Stretching or tearing of muscle fibers

Call EMS if !!!!!
  • Head neck or spine
  • The injury impairs breathing
  • You suspect multiple fractures or dislocation
  • If there is an elbow injury
  • If there is dislocation or fracture to the femur

Care for minor musculoskeletal injuries
  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Elevate
  • Immobilize

SPLINTINGthe purpose of immobilizing
  • Reduce the pain
  • Prevent further damage to soft tissue
  • Reduce the risk of serious bleeding
  • Prevent closed fractures from becoming open

Splinting Principles
  • Splint only if you can do it without causing more
    pain and discomfort
  • SPLINT AN INJURY IN THE POSITION YOU FIND IT
  • Control any external bleeding

SPLINTING PRINCIPLES cont.
  • Splint the injured area above and below the
    injury site
  • Check for circulation before and after splinting
  • Pad or fill any open spaces
