The first electronic digital computer built in
the United States, ENIAC, was unveiled at the
University of Penn-sylvania in 1946. It
weighed 30 tons, filled the space of a two-car
garage, and contained 18,000 vacuum tubes, which
failed on average at the rate of one every seven
minutes. It cost half a million dollars in 1946
prices.

Today, the same amount of computing power is
contained in a pea-size silicon chip. Almost any
home computer costing as little as 100 can
outper-form ENIAC. Put another way, if the
automobile and airplane businesses had developed
like the computer business,
