2
Plasma
  • 90 Water with 100
  • different dissolved
  • solutes 8 plasma proteins
  • 60 albumin-carrier for
  • certain molecules , buffer, major in contributing
    to osmotic
  • pressure alone with Na

3
Red blood cell
  • Origin- bone marrow
  • Function- gas transport (1 billion O2 each)
    produce ATP anaerobically hemoglobin
  • Hemoglobin
  • substance containing iron found in red blood
cells, which helps the blood to exchange carbon
    dioxide for oxygen.

4
Neutrophil
  • Origin- bone marrow
  • Function- most numerous
  • numbers with bacterial
  • infections phagocytize
  • bacteria and some
  • fungi contain defensins

5
Eosinophil
  • Origin- bone marrow
  • Function- kill parasitic worms destroy
    antigen-antibody complexes inactivate some
    inflammatory chemicals or allergies.

6
Basophil
  • Origin- bone marrow
  • Function- rarest release histamine and other
mediators of inflammation contain heparin, an
anticoagulant, that acts as a vasodilator.

7
Lymphocyte
  • Origin- bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen.
  • Function- mount immune response by direct cell
    attack or via antibodies.

8
Monocyte
  • Origin- bone marrow
  • Function- during chronic infections
    phagocytosis develop into macrophages in
tissues attack viruses and certain intracellular
    bacterial parasites.

9
Platelet
  • Origin- bone marrow
  • Function- critical role in blood clotting
  • Smallest cell in the blood.
  • When a blood vessel is cut, platelets clump
    together to plug it.

10
ABO Blood Groups
  • Four basic groups A, B, AB, O.
  • Discovered by Karl Landsteiner 1900
  • Based on 2 Antigens (A and B)

11
AnemiaInsufficient number of rbcs
  • Anemia is not a disease.
  • There are a decreasing number of red blood cells,
which carry oxygen, thus less oxygen.
  • If you are tired you may suspect anemia.
  • Signs
  • light headedness
  • pallor (pale skin)
  • weakness, tiredness, fatigue
  • chest pains
  • headaches
  • etc..

12
AnemiaDecreases in hemoglobin content
  • Hemoglobin is the red pigment in red blood cells
that carry oxygen to different parts of the body.
  • A decrease in hemoglobin equals a decrease in
    oxygen circulation.

13
AnemiaAbnormal hemoglobin
  • Sickle cell anemia is abnormal hemoglobin.
  • It is a hereditary disorder that primarily
    affects people of African ancestry.
  • It occurs when two abnormal cells are inherited.
  • Instead of being flexible and round, these cells
    are rigid and curved.

14
WBC disorder- Leukemia
  • It occurs when there is a large number of
    abnormal white blood cells .
  • They are called leukocytes.
  • Since these cells are abnormal they dont help
    protect your body against infection.

15
WBC disorder- mononucleosis
  • It is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.
  • A member of the herpes family.
  • Once youve been infected it stays in your body
for the rest of your life, and can reappear in
    saliva.
