Quetzalcoatl
  • Quetzalcoatl means plumed or feathered serpent to
    Mesoamerican cultures. In Mesoamerican myth
Quetzalcoatl is also a mythical culture hero from
whom almost all mesoamerican peoples claim
descent. In these myths he is often described as
the a divine ruler of the mythical Toltecs who
after his expulsion from Tollan travelled south
or east to found new cities and kingdoms. Many
    different Mesoamerican cultures, e.g. Maya,
K'iche, Pipil, Zapotec claim to have been the
only true lineage of Quetzalcoatl and thus of the
    mythical Toltecs.

Delores de Hidalgo
  • The city was a small town known simply as Dolores
when Miguel Hidalgo uttered his famous cry for
the independence of Mexico there in the early
morning hours of September 16, 1810. After Mexico
achieved independence, the town was renamed
    "Dolores Hidalgo" in his honor.
  • Today Dolores Hidalgo is known primarily for its
ceramics industry, which provides income to well
    over half the town's population.
  • The central square of the town, in front of
Father Hidalgo's historic church, is popular on
weekends for the many unusual flavors of
locally-made ice cream sold by vendors.
  • Dolores Hidalgo is a place when many people
celebrate their birthdays, giving a sense of
    belonging to the Mexican world.

Population
  • Famous worldwide for its mild climate, thermal
springs and colonial era architecture, San Miguel
de Allende has attracted a large community of
    foreign residents. The municipal government
estimates that there are 9,000 to 10,000 foreign
residents in the municipality, though these
estimates have been disputed. Some suggest that
as much as 40-50 of the municipal seat's
population is comprised of foreigners, of which
the majority (perhaps 75) are from the U.S.
