Shall we go with SNOMED CT?

  in EPRs

Pilots

• 2005
• Pilots set up to demonstrate if EPR structure and
  terminology content match
• GEPJ (Basic structure for EPR) and
• FLPR (Period of Care based National Patient
  Register)

Pilot Outcomes

• SNOMED CT is seen as presenting the best match
  between structure and content
• However,To be accepted for daily clinical work
  SCT needs to be translated into the local
  language

First tool selected

• 2005
• Microsoft Excel is selected as THE tool to be
  used in a pilot translation project, in which
  40.000 SCT concepts are to be translated
• Traditional translation tools (TRADOS) were based
  on translating words NOT concepts

Failure

• No change history tracking
• No controlled workflow
• No graphical visualisation of concepts, their
  position in the hierarchies, their relationships
• No subset creation facilities
• No structured approval procedure
• No publication mechanism

Now what?

• 2005
• Pilot Translation project was stopped
• A decision to have a translation application
  developed was made
• CareCom was awarded the contract for a
  cooperation project to bring forth the new
  application

  other classifications
• CareCom decided to expand its focus from SCT to
  envisage an Overall HealthcareTerminology
  Service containing numerous terminologies and
  classifications

• Clinical specialty specific subsets are to be
  tested at selected hospitals
• Validation of the translation of FSN and PT and
  suggestion of synonyms
• Request for new single concepts and post
  co-ordinated concepts

  classifications need to be mapped against each
  other and SCT as well
