The Sahara andThe Sahel
  • Living in the wind, sand, and heat of a harsh
    desert

3
The Sahara
  • The Sahara is the worlds largest desert.
  • It is very hot and very dry
  • Fun Fact The worlds highest known daytime
temperature, 136ºF, was recorded in the Sahara in
    1922.
  • Trade winds blowing across North Africa work to
keep the region dry by picking up moisture from
the ground. No moisture, No Clouds, No Rain, No
    Shade
  • Most of the Plants and Animals that live in the
Sahara are found near oases (an isolated location
where water is found in a desert).

4
The Sahel
  • The Sahel is the region on the southern border of
    the Sahara.
  • Even though the Sahel receives more rain than the
Sahara, it still suffers from regular droughts.
  • Farming the Sahel is difficult, and those who try
    barely survive.
  • The Sahel has recently been impacted by
desertification, a process in which an area
    becomes increasingly dry.

5
The Desert Landscape
  • In just a single afternoon, a traveler in the
    Sahara
  • could see pink and yellow dunes, blue craggy
  • cliffs, black volcanic rubble an eroded gulch,
    two
  • dry rivers, a cone, a canyon, and many badlands
  • barren hills.
  • There are 3 basic desert landforms
  • Ergs great seas of sand with tall sand dunes
  • Regs gravel-covered plains
  • Hammadas high, rock-covered flatlands
  • If they are lucky, an occasional desert traveler
might stumble across an oasis. An oasis is an
island of fresh water in the dry sea of sand and
rock. Oases are usually formed by underground
springs, and allow life to exist in this harsh
    environment.

6
The Desert Climate
  • Temperatures in the Desert can very greatly,
often soaring above 100F during the day and
sometimes dropping below freezing at night.
  • A desert is home to harsh sandstorms and scarce
    and unpredictable rainfall.
  • Plants and animals learn to adapt to these
conditions. For example, some plants sprout
rapidly after a rain and then set seed and die.
The seeds then wait, sometimes even years, for
    the next rainfall.

7
Desertification
  • Desertification (the process by which land
becomes more and more dry until it turns into
desert) is a pressing issue in the Sahel region.
  • There are 2 major causes of Desertification in
    the Sahel
  • A long string of back-to-back droughts have
devastated the Sahel, and the meager rainfal has
not been enough to recover the land.
  • Farmers in the Sahel have begun to raise cash
crops, like peanuts, which often wear out the
    soil faster than traditional crops.
