Objectives

  • Symbolism, and how on a symbolic level, Lord of
the Flies investigates what happens to civilized
people when the structure of civilization
    disappear.
  • That on a realistic level, Lord of the Flies
raises the question of physical and psychological
    preparation for challenging situations.

4
Assignment I
  • Students will pretend to be the rescued boys from
the island. The class will be divided into three
    groups. Group
  • (1) will pretend to be the rescued boys who look
at the occurrences on the island through Ralphs
    point of view.
  • (2) will pretend to be the rescued boys who look
at the occurrences on the island through Ralphs
    point of view.
  • (3) will act as an audience of adult judges, such
as parents and police as well as other authority
figures. This group will ask questions of the
two groups of children in order to pass judgment
    on them.

5
Group One Jack
  • First Define Jacks character. What kind of
    person is he?
  • Why does he feel he should be chief?
  • What type of influence does he have on the rest
    of the children?
  • Is he a doer or a thinker?
  • How would he define leadership, justice ,
    teamwork, and power?
  • Second consider the following questions by way
of preparing for question from the judges.
  • What happened?
  • What events does Jack have first hand knowledge
    of?
  • What events does Jack only hear about?
  • What actions would Jack defend most emphatically?
    Why?
  • HELP visit SparkNotes Lord of the Flies on the
web for character analysis on Ralph and other
    resources on this book.

6
Group Two Ralph
  • First Define Ralphs character.
  • What events does Ralph have first hand knowledge
    of?
  • What events does Ralph only hear about?
  • What actions would Ralph defend most
    emphatically? Why?
  • HELP visit SparkNotes Lord of the Flies on the

7
Group Three
  • First Prepare questions for both groups.
Determine what you, as judges, need to find out
from the other two groups in order to come to a
fair judgment. Consider a way to look beyond the
boys personalities to find an accurate depiction
of what happened on the island.
  • Second After the two groups are interrogated,
the adults, serving as judges, will formulate
their conclusion. You will be expected to
  • Define leadership, teamwork, justice and power in
your own terms. This will serve as a guide to
understanding why you have decided in that
    particular manner.
  • Come up with punishments and rewards for the two
groups. Identify why they are either rewarded or
    punished.

8
Assignment II
  • Groups 1, 2, and 3 will meet and (30min)
  • Imagine that they and their classmates may one
day have to face a challenge like that confronted
by the boys in Lord of the Flies. Would you be
prepared to find yourself on a deserted island
with no adult supervision? Design a curriculum
for a school semester that would teach the
knowledge, values, and skills you would need to
surmount all the challenges you would face.
  • Tip consider health issues like nutrition as
    well as social issues.

9
Closure
  • At the end of class, students will turn in
Assignment II in written form to be graded by the
