Life Before PM
  • Elected to parliament standing for Bexley/Sidcup
    1950.
  • Assistant Opposite Whip 1951.
  • Joint Deputy Chief Whip 1952 and Chief Whip
    1955.
  • Served as Minister of Labour and Lord Privy Seal
    1959 1960.

  • Main man behind the first application to join the
    European Community.
  • Award Charlemagne Prize, for his contribution to
    International Co-operation.

Achievements
  • The economic policy changes, involving a change
    from direct to indirect taxation in 1972.
  • Attempted to strengthen legal constraints on
    Trade Unions.
  • Awarded European Prize for Statesmanship.
  • Attempted to curtail welfare spending, cutting
    back the education budget. Did not agree with
    Margaret Thatcher on many occasions.

Downfalls
  • Leader at the time of Bloody Sunday, 1972, during
    the Northern Ireland Troubles, allowed the use of
    unlawful lethal force, and secret talks were held
    with a Provisional IRA delegation.
  • Sunningdale Agreement repudiated, the
    Conservative party lost the support of many
    Unionists, as it tried to make the Unionists
    share power with the Nationalists.
