Title: Net mapping project
1Net mapping project CORE Group Fall
meeting October 7, 2009
The Net mapping project was prepared by John
Milliner, USAID/AFR, PMI Team, at the request of
the Alliance for Malaria Prevention
2LLINs
- Long Lasting Insecticide treated bednets
- Proven intervention for malaria control
- Integral part of many malaria programs in Africa
- World Bank
- Global Fund
- UNICEF
- PMI
- among others
3Universal Coverage
Covering everyone in Africa at risk to malaria
with a LLIN by December 30, 2010
4Net mapping project
- This project was developed to address several key
questions for the malaria community - How many LLINs are currently in Africa?
- Where are they?
- When were they delivered?
- What nets are worn out or are in need of
replacement? - How many?
- Where are they?
- When do they need to be replaced?
- How close are we to Universal Coverage?
- How many more nets do we need?
5Net mapping project
We are now in a position to answer these
questions.
6Net mapping project
- Project designed as a top down approach
- Builds on manufacturer deliveries
- Limited number of manufacturers
- Incentives established to encourage
participation - confidentiality
- win win data sharing
-
-
7Net mapping project
- Assumptions on data collected from
- manufacturers
- Manufacturer deliveries by country is a true
reflection of the number of LLINs in sub-Saharan
Africa - Sumitomo, A-Z, Vestergaard-Frandsen, Clarke,
BASF, Intection/BestNet, Tana Netting, are the
only manufacturers of LLINs and no other LLINs
are available in sub-Saharan Africa - All nets delivered to a country were distributed
in that country with very little cross border
movement
8Net mapping project
- Assumptions on net replacement
- Life of a net
- Polyester nets last 3 years
- Polyethylene nets last 4 years
- Very little agreement on this issue
9Net mapping project
- Assumptions on population and universal coverage
- Malaria at-risk population estimates in 2010 by
country were obtained from Bob Snow, et al from
their work on the MAP project - Universal coverage defined as 1 LLIN per 2
persons at-risk - Adjustments for other interventions such as IRS
or ITNs
10Net mapping project
- Methodology
- Determine the number of LLINs currently in each
country using manufacturer delivery data - Determine the number of LLINs already worn out
and in need of replacement based on type of net
and when they were delivered - Determine the number of LLINs needed to reach
universal coverage based on malaria at-risk
population - Calculate the number of new LLINs needed to reach
universal coverage based on - Requirements for new nets need available
replacements

22Net mapping project
As of June 30, 2009 the number of available LLINs
in sub-Saharan Africa represents 52 of the total
required for Universal Coverage
23Net mapping project
As of June 30, 2009, we will need 232M new LLINs
in sub-Saharan Africa to reach Universal Coverage
by December 30, 2010
24Net mapping project
- Conclusions to date
- This project has developed a methodology to help
establish a base of knowledge on nets. - We now know
- How many nets are in sub-Saharan Africa
- Where they are
- When they were delivered
- When do they need to be replaced
- How many more nets we need
- Where we need them
25Net Mapping Project
- Conclusions for the Core Group
- Global focus to get these nets to the countries
- Huge need for effective local distribution
- Community-based NGOs can have a significant role
- BCC is also necessary for effective utilization
