Legislation
  • Allows the EPA to set National Ambient Air
    Quality Standards (NAAQS)
  • Primary goal of the act was to set and achieve
    NAAQSs in every state by 1975
  • Amended in 1977 and 1990 to set new standards and
    dates for their implementation

Hazardous Air Pollutants
  • Prior to the 1990 revisal of the act few
    limitations were set on emissions
  • After 1990 the CAA set standards which regulate
    the emissions from point-source major sources
    (those that release more than 10 tons of a single
    airborne pollutant or more than 25 tons of
    multiple pollutants
  • The EPA also set Maximum Achievable Control
    Technology (MACT) standards which require a
    maximum reduction of hazardous air pollutants
