Format of the Test
  • Two components to the test The Stimulus
    Material READING MAGAZINE and the Actual
    READING TEST
  • Allowed Time for Reading Test 65 minutes
  • Test Conditions as outlined on front of test
    booklet.
  • Test booklet completion procedures name to be
    printed by student in space provided

Looking at the Reading Magazine
  • Contains a variety of articles
  • The articles vary in terms of the genre in which
    they are written ( a story, letters, scientific
    report, review)
  • Stimulus material within the article varies may
    be all text (words) or may be text with
    photographs, pictures, maps, graphs, tables
  • Different writing conventions may be used e.g.
    use of footnotes, use of italics

How the Reading Magazine and Reading Test Booklet

  • The Reading Magazine contains the information to
    which the questions in the test booklet relate.
  • It is important to identify to which articles in
    the Reading Magazine specific questions in the
    test booklet relate.
  • For example, Questions 1-7 on the Test Booklet
    relate to the Article on Page 3 of the Reading
    Magazine.

Questions Together
  • Start with the Test Booklet. Look at the First
    set of Questions 1-7.
  • You are instructed to read A court case in
    Ancient China on Page 3 of Reading Magazine
  • Read article note features use of Italics,
    use of standard text a narrative, use of
    footnotes (1 2) and a diagram

Answering the Questions
  • After reading the text look at the questions in
    the test booklet
  • Apply the strategies of answering a multiple
    choice question refer back to the article
    paragraph 1 eliminate the obvious incorrect
    (a) and (d) look for key word in question Why
    did each bring piece of paper? Paragraph one
    last sentence Each claims therefore (b) to
    show he could prove claim is correct answer

Working through the other questions 2-7
  • To answer these questions need to consider
  • Use of language identified by italics the
    whites of his eyes need to look where and how
    these words are used in the text, same for
    angrily, handed to each the others paper,
    perplexedly at the documents in their hands
    (note footnote 2 explains meaning of perplexedly)
  • What answers relate directly to the text
