What is the Jones Model?

• The Jones Model was developed by Fredric Jones,
  a psychologist at UCLA, who is also know as The
  King of Classroom Management. He conducted
  research and found that teachers needed to
  utilize their presence in the classroom to ensure
  that students remained on task and did not
  disrupt the learning process. Jones views
  misbehavior as taking time away from learning.

Key Points about Jones Model

• Classroom management procedures must be positive.
• They must also affirm students while setting
  limits and promoting cooperation.
• Discipline procedures must be practical, simple
  and easily mastered.
• Children need a controlled environment in order
  to behave properly.
• Teachers can obtain control through nonverbal
  cues and movements.

Be Positive

• Jones suggest using incentives to prevent time
  lost.
• Offer incentives such as preferred activity
  time
• Reinforcing good behaviors will lead to there
  frequency.

Classroom Rules

• Rules must be clarified or students will
  determine their own limits.
• Spend time getting to know the rules.
• Rules must be taught, not stated.
• Rules must spell out exactly what is expected.
• Rules must be re-taught throughout the year.
