Introduction

• Third in line to the throne at one point, he
  became heir through two untimely deaths. The 1st
  was of the emperors son, Crown Prince Rudolph,
  who killed himself in 1889. The 2nd was the death
  of his father, Archduke Charles Louis, in 1896.
• He marries Countess Sophia von Chotkowa and
  Wognin, Duchess of Hohenburg in 1900.
• In 1913 he became inspector general of armies.

Assassination

• On June 28, 1914, Francis Ferdinand and his wife,
  Sophie went to Sarajevo on an inspector tour.
• While there, they were assassinated by the 19
  year old Gavrilo Princip.
• June 28th was their 14th wedding anniversary.
  Sophie dear, Sophie dear, dont die! Stay alive
  for our children.These were Archdukes last
  words.

Gavrilo Princip

• Serbian political agitator.
• As a high school student and a member of the
  Serbian nationalist secret society Union or death
  (known as the Black Hand), he assassinated
  Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife at
  Sarajevo in 1914.
• Gavrilo Princip died of tuberculosis in an
  Austrian prison in 1918. He remains a Serbian hero

Conclusion

• The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand
  made Austria declare war on Serbia.
• The World War 1 was started.
