What are the Benefits?
The much faster customer experience with 3G HSDPA
  • Improved depth of coverage including extended
    coverage on highways and indoors.
  • More Services allowing you to make and receive
video calls, watch mobile TV, access the
internet, receive emails and download music as
well as the usual voice calls and text messaging
    services available today.
  • Mobile Broadband access utilising HSDPA
technology. At launch the new network will
average 550kbps 1.1Mbps with planned increases
    in data speeds in 2007/8.
  • Global Roaming to more than 140 countries
overseas. Telstra will have the largest roaming
choices to the world with 2G/3G

Its like going from dial-up internet to
broadband, hence 3G is referred to as wireless
or mobile broadband
4
3GSM around the world
3GSM at 850MHz is gaining momentum on the world
stage
  • 3GSM family of technologies
  • In June 2006 the GSM Association (GSMA) announced
its 2 billionth GSM user globally
  • Today, more than 690 mobile networks provide GSM
services across 213 countries and GSM represents
82.4 of all global mobile connections.
  • 3GSM at 850MHz is gaining momentum
  • Cingular, a leading US operator with 51m
subscribers, launched its high speed mobile
broadband network including 3G850 last December
  • Rogers Wireless, Canadas largest voice and data
operator, is also deploying 3GSM at 850MHz
  • Many Latin American telcos are expected to follow
    suit

5
One truly national 3G/HSDPA service
3G850 using HSDPA greater breadth, much faster
services, lower capital costs
  • Greater breadth of coverage from 3G850 is
    necessary for Australias landscape
  • More than 98 population coverage or 1.6 million
square kilometres by the end of 2007
  • Better in-building coverage
  • By augmenting with HSDPA, customers will enjoy
  • much faster services
  • Average data rates 500kbps - 1.1Mbps (launch),
peaking at 3.6Mbps (launch) and migrating to a
    peak of 14Mbps (2007)
  • With 3G850
  • Greater range at 850MHz, fewer base stations,
    lower capital costs
  • More effective capital investment now focussed on
    one network

6
One national 3G service
National 3G service on track more than half built
  • Network deployment more than half built with
gt3000 850MHz base stations installed since
November one of the fastest global roll-outs
  • Video call trial proved the technology, its 3G
2100 network compatibility, and showed, at
    850MHz, wireless broadband provides superior
    coverage
  • Innovative and unique services are in
    development
  • Handset device procurement for 3G850 well
    advanced

7
Telstras 3G850 coverage
The largest 3G coverage in Australia
  • We are deploying 3G850 equipment in to every GSM
    and CDMA base station
  • It is CDMA based technology (Wideband-CDMA)
  • It works at the same frequency as CDMA (850MHz)
  • It propagates through the same antennae as CDMA
  • The sensitivity of devices is similar to CDMA
  • therefore we expected and are seeing similar
    performance characteristics- same coverage as
    CDMA.
  • The CDMA network will not be closed until same or
better coverage and services is demonstrated
  • Coverage and performance will continue to expand
because of continuing year on year investment,
focussed on one technology, committed to the best
    network for all Australians.

In Summary
  • The new 3G 850 network will offer the same, if
not better, coverage as CDMA when the network is
fully operational by the end of 2007.
  • The CDMA network will operate until 2008, giving
customers more than 12 months to migrate.
  • There will be a range of handsets and accessories
available and attractive offers for customers to
    choose from.
  • This new technology will offer customers exciting
new services such as calling, broadband internet
access and video content streaming as well as
    greatly improved roaming.
  • We will keep customers informed during this
    period of change.
