Title: OUTWARD DISCIPLINES

1
OUTWARD DISCIPLINES
  • Discipline of Simplicity
  • Discipline of Solitude
  • The Discipline of Submission
  • The Discipline of Service

2
Discipline of Simplicity
  • The Discipline of Simplicity leads One to Inner
Peace and Freedom From Anxiety. Anxiety occurs
when we believes\ that what we have, we have
gotten, we must hold onto, and Is Not available
to others. Simplicity frees one from anxieties
and will give more energy to focus on being a
    Servant.

3
Outward Expression of Simplicity
  •
  • Buy things for their usefulness rather than their
    status
  • Recognize and reject things that enslave us.(Do
material possessions have a higher priority in
    our lives that people?
  • Develop a habit of giving things away.
  • Be environmentally responsible and make sound
purchases. We needs to be aware of and work
against the impulsiveness to buy. We need to try
to delay purchases and discern needs better.
Avoid buy now pay later schemes. Delayed
    Gratification
  • Learn to enjoy things without owning them.
Life can be enjoyed without controlling or
possessing. The library is our friend.
  • Stewardship of the earth.

4
Outward expression of Simply Living cont.
  • Live a life of virtue, love, hope, justice, right
    judgment,honesty, truth, compassion, forgive,
    peacemaker,
  • Treat all life with dignity
  • Be sensitive to and be an advocate for the needs
    of others.
  • Prioritize, set goals that are life-giving for
    self, and others.

5
Discipline of Solitude
  • Jesus by example has model the importance of
solitude. Throughout scripture we see Jesus
withdrawing from the crowds, to seek out places
    of solitude.
  • Solitude and silence requires the absences of
speech and involves the act of listening to God.
Even in a day filled with noise one can have
    inner solitude and silence.
  • One uses words to manipulate, guide and control
others. SILENCE is one way to bring us into
    liberation.

6
Solitude
  • The discipline of solitude needs to occur in both
the little and big ways in ones life. The little
solitudes in life need to occur daily they can
be little moments of rest, spent in a silent
prayer, that lead one to find joy and meaning in
the little things of life. Bigger Solitudes are
opportunities for one to be refueled and
refocused on goals and dreams. (Getaways, vacations
    ,retreats,conferences)

7
Solitude
  • Like Jesus we must go away from people so we can
be truly present when we are with people.

8
The Discipline of Submission
  • The discipline of submission is the ability to
lay down our burdens that get in the way of God.
One of my sayings that I have learned to live by
is Compared to a nuclear bomb this is nothing!
It is important to realize that most things in
life are no big deal, it is important to hold
    them lightly..
  • To recognize what really matters in life.

9
Submission
  • Biblical teaching for submission focuses on the
spirit of how we view others. Jesus stressed
that the real issue was how we view and treat
others. In the discipline of submission it is
important honor, respect, value, and serve
    others.

10
Submission
  • Liberation comes in submission when we are set
free from the anger and bitterness we feel, when
someone doesnt act the way we think they should.
Jesus taught us toLove our enemies and pray for
those who persecute us. Surrender the right to
    retaliate.

11
Discerning Submission
  • There are three points at which submission
becomes destructive to one. If submission means
breaking the law, unusual and harmful punishment,
    or violate scripture.
  • Holistic, Healthy Acts of submission
  • Listen and submit ones self to the living word,
and will of God. Open one self up to listen, to
receive the message and apply it ones life.
  • Seek to understand, look beyond self to the need
    of others.

12
BE POLITE
  • Be present and polite to those we meet in the
    course of the day.
  • Acknowledge the other
  • Manners count!

13
The Discipline of Service
  • Whoever would be great among you must be your
servant even the son of man came not to be
served but to serve (Matt 2025-28).

14
Service
  • Self-righteous service is when one is motivate by
external rewards, or when one manipulates others
to be indebted to them. Self-righteous service
    fractures communities. True services simply
serves because there is a need. One welcomes all
opportunities to serves. One does not to seek or
hide from attention but is motivated by the
opportunity to just help another. Be aware of
how you manipulate others, reflection on your
    motivations.
