Social-Cognitive Theory
  • Social-cognitive theory arose from the
    limitations of behaviorism
  • Behaviorism environment behavior
  • Bandura argued that learning is not limited to
classical and operant learning cognitive factors
play a large role in determining behavior

3
Banduras Theory
  • Reciprocal Determinism The three components of
    learning are behavior, external factors
    (environment) and internal factors (cognition).
All three components interact with one another.
  • Our beliefs and expectations have an effect on
our behavior, which shapes our environment.

4
Banduras Reciprocal Determinism Model
Behavior
Internal factors (Beliefs, thoughts)
External factors (Rewards, Punishments)
5
Social Learning
  • Learning can occur though observation only,
    without the presence of reinforcement.

6
The Bobo Doll Study
  • The study was conducted with 33 girls and 33 boys
between the ages of 3 and 5.
  • Children watched a video of an adult performing
aggressive acts on a blow-up Bobo doll. The adult
in the video was either punished, rewarded, or
    given no consequence.
  • Children that saw a punished model were less
likely to exhibit aggressive behaviors when left
    alone.

7
The Bobo Study
  • Results demonstrated that learning can and does
    occur without reinforcement

8
Applications
  • Aggression
  • Children can learn aggressive behavior just by
watching it on a video, which spurred more
research on aggression in children and the media.
  • Sex Differences
  • Results showed that boys displayed consistently
more aggressive behaviors than girls. Bandura
argued that aggressive behavior is usually not
reinforced in girls. This also indicates that
    gender-based behaviors are also learned.
