Title: Ergonomics

1
Ergonomics
  • By Charlotte Davies and Tiffany Ratcliffe

2
Ergonomics means a unit of work
It is the study of work and the environment in
which we work in!
3
Furniture
  • When selecting furniture, take health and safety
    into consideration.
  • Wood has a softer look but is dangerous in
    event of a fire.
  • Steel is more fire resistant and would keep
    documents safe.
  • Plastic could give off toxic fumes should it
    catch fire.

4
The Office Furniture
  • Chairs
  • Good back support
  • Chair with an adjustable height.
  • These factors will prevent back and shoulder
    aches.
  • Adjusted height can prevent developing repetitive
    strain injury.
  • Desks
  • Enough room for a computer.
  • Enough room to write.
  • Best desks are L-shaped corner desks.

5
Decoration
  • When decorating an office, avoid using
    striking, bold colours.
  • Neutral or pastel shades should be used,
such as cream, pale pink or blue, which gives a
    warm and welcoming appearance.
  • Carpets are more comfortable as they are
good at absorbing sound, so reducing noise
    levels.
  • You must take care in choosing the
right carpet so it doesnt gather dust.
  • Pictures are a good idea because they
    give a homely atmosphere.

6
Fixtures and fittings
  • These are the permanent features of an office and
include lighting, ventilation, heating and toilet
    facilities
  • The office must be light to enable staff to
    see their work.
  • Ventilation in the office needs to be at a calm
pace and the air changed regularly.
  • Air conditioning should maintain a constant
    temperature all year round.
  • Heating should also be regulated according to the
Offices, Shops and Railways Act where minimum
and maximum office temperatures are specified.

7
Advantages of Ergonomics
  • Staff are happier with pleasant comfortable
working conditions and will be motivated to work
    harder.
  • Staff are less likely to seek new employment if
    they like their environment.
  • Recruitment is easier because more people with
    like the comfortable surroundings.
  • Less time is lost through illness or other forms
    or absenteeism.
  • Better working relationships are formed as people
    are happier in their environment.
