Education and Outreach Goals
  • To prepare students for solving complex
    interdisciplinary engineering problems and
understanding societal impacts by providing an
education that integrates courses at all levels,
is driven by the research and incorporates
    experimental test beds.
  • To enable K12 teachers to gain a better
    understanding of complex interdisciplinary
engineered systems and the impact on society.
  • To address the paucity of females and minorities
    in the engineering pipeline
  • To deliver an agenda that has local, state and
    national impact
  • To fully integrate education and outreach
    policies, programs and activities with
    management, infrastructure and the research
    activities of this ERC.

How Do We Meet Our Goals?

4
CASA Diverse Students
  • CASA (in aggregate) continues to significantly
exceed national averages in all categories (for
    females, underrepresented minorities and
Hispanics) at the B.S. and M.S. levels.
  • CASA continues to significantly exceed national
averages for females and Hispanics for Ph.D. and
    faculty.
  • CASA is challenged to recruit African-American,
Native American or Pacific Island doctoral
students or faculty members however, at least
one CASA student is expected to continue from the
    M.S. to the Ph.D.

5
How Does CASA Facilitate Diversity?
  • CASA operates with a committee charged with
    facilitating a diverse ERC
  • Committee Members
  • Kathleen Rubin, UMass, Chair
  • Fred Carr and Renee McPherson, OU
  • Sandra Cruz-Pol, UPRM
  • Omnia El-Hakim, CSU
  • CASA completes an annual strategic plan and
    benchmarks against national norms.
  • In addition to CASA in aggregate, each campus
develops local strategies to support diversity.

6
10 Ways to Facilitate Diversity in Your ERC(that
have worked for me)!
  • Advice to new ERCs
  • Have a person in the ERC who has overall
responsibility for ensuring diversity and a
point person on each campus (form a committee).
    Pay them!
  • Find the MEP/WEP/Student Affairs office in your
engineering college to assist you in identifying
    talented students.
  • Networking is the Key! Approach students Be a
    matchmaker for your faculty
  • Develop student exchanges for REU program (who
    are your colleagues and friends?)
  • Identify your nearest LSAMP and AGEP partners
    (maximize your funding!)

7
10 Ways to Facilitate Diversity in Your ERC(that
have worked for me)!
  • 6. Visit your nearby minority serving
    institutions and develop a relationship.
  • 7. Set aside funds in your ERC budget to
facilitate diversity for travel to conferences
    and to hire students opportunistically
  • 8. Mentor potential undergrads for your grad
programs dont lose touch with them.
  • 9. Meet with NSBE and SHPE student groups and
tell them about your ERC and the opportunities
    there.
  • 10. Have your deans and department heads support
your efforts they should be aware of how the
ERC is doing with respect to diversity and should
    discuss annually or oftener.

8
Final Thought
  • Final assess student diversity in your ERC now!
Put it in table form and update each semester.
